The cranes are eerily beautiful, soaring into the sky like Gothic spires. When darkness falls, they are bathed in a brilliant light, appearing both dangerous and alluring.

Ferropolis, the City of Iron, is both a museum and an event venue located near Gräfenhainichen on a peninsula in Lake Gremmin. Set in the former Golpa-Nord open-pit mine, this open-air museum—with its five massive lignite excavators saved from the scrap heap—commemorates 150 years of lignite mining in Central Germany. Up to 25,000 visitors can enjoy a magical and unique atmosphere here, especially during concerts. A visit to the open-pit giants is also a special experience for younger guests. Against a breathtaking backdrop, a children’s playground invites kids to play and climb.
